Life is a Cabaret!

One of the most important projects in Fosse's life was his direction and choreography for the film adaptation of Cabaret. Fosse made Liza Minnelli a star from this movie, and they established a long-lasting professional relationship. One of the incredible things about this film is that it is completely seamless between songs and scenes. Fosse is known for this ability in his movie direction. His films almost feel like documentaries at times; he manages to make them very intimate, despite the fact that the audience is not in the room with the actors. Another notable element of this movie is the iconic choreography and the expressiveness of the dancers. Fosse was excellent at drawing out exactly what he wanted from his actors, and Cabaret exemplifies this with the Kit Kat dancers. Their movements, facial expressions, and intensity are classic Fosse elements. The video above is Mein Herr, a song which showcases both Liza Minnelli and the ensemble.

  1. Cabaret's one of my favorite movies! Did he do all of the choreography--for the Kit Kat dancers? Joel Grey?--or just Liza Minnelli? Thanks for posting the video too! Such a great scene!

  3. Do you think that his ability to create continuity in his movies stem in any way from his theatre training?
